Eligio Meléndez

Eligio Meléndez (born June 20, 1950) is a highly respected Mexican actor and director with a career spanning over five decades in film, television, and theatre. A graduate of the Andrés Soler Acting Institute, he has become a staple of Mexican cinema, known for his ability to bring gravity and "emotional intelligence" to complex characters. He achieved significant critical acclaim later in his career, notably winning the Ariel Award for Best Actor in 2018 and the Mezcal Award for his poignant performance in I Dream in Another Language (Sueño en otro idioma), where he played a man holding onto a dying indigenous language. His extensive filmography includes roles in celebrated projects such as Perfume de violetas, El coronel no tiene quien le escriba, and the controversial thriller Nuevo Orden (2020). In addition to his film work, Meléndez is a veteran of the small screen, with prominent roles in series like El Señor de los Cielos, Un extraño enemigo, and the 2023 series El Mantequilla: Maestro de la estafa. Most recently, in 2025, he appeared in the action-thriller Border Hunters and the film Dreams, continuing his legacy as one of Mexico's most reliable and versatile performers. Beyond acting, he has also contributed to the industry as a director of several theatre productions and short films, including Los encuentros and Ensayo general.
