Elizabeth Ashley

Elizabeth Ashley (born Elizabeth Ann Cole on August 30, 1939, in Ocala, Florida) is an American actress known for her extensive work in theatre, film, and television, with a career active since 1960. She is a highly accomplished stage performer, having been nominated for three Tony Awards and winning the award for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 1962 for Take Her, She's Mine. She went on to star as Corie in the original Broadway production of Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park (1963) and later as Maggie in a notable 1974 Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, receiving Tony nominations for both roles. Her film career includes early roles in The Carpetbaggers (1964), which earned her BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations, as well as roles in Ship of Fools (1965), Coma (1978), Dragnet (1987), and Ocean's 8 (2018). On television, she was a main cast member as Aunt Frieda Evans on the sitcom Evening Shade from 1990 to 1994, which earned her an Emmy Award nomination. She is an alumna of the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2024. Ashley is also the author of an autobiography titled Actress: Postcards from the Road. She was married and divorced three times, to actors James Farentino and George Peppard, and to James McCarthy, and she has one son, Christian, with George Peppard.
