Eric Roberts is an American actor born on April 18, 1956, in Biloxi, Mississippi, and is the older brother of actress Julia Roberts and the father of actress Emma Roberts. Raised in an artistic household by parents who ran an acting and writing school, he began acting as a child and later studied drama at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. His early career garnered significant acclaim, starting with a Golden Globe nomination for his film debut in King of the Gypsies (1978) and an Academy Award and Golden Globe nomination for his supporting role in the 1985 film Runaway Train. Although he has had personal struggles, including a serious car accident in 1981 and issues with substance abuse, he has consistently worked, amassing over 700 acting credits across film and television, making him one of the most prolific screen actors. His vast filmography includes roles in major productions like The Dark Knight and The Expendables, a turn as The Master in the 1996 Doctor Who TV film, and recurring roles in TV series such as Less than Perfect and Heroes. He continues to have a thriving, diverse career in Hollywood and has recently published a memoir titled Runaway Train: or, The Story of My Life So Far.
