She began performing at Theatre in the Park, founded by her father, and transitioned to television and film as a teenager. Wood's breakout role came with the film Thirteen (2003), where she portrayed a troubled teen, earning her a Golden Globe nomination and widespread critical acclaim. She further showcased her talent in The Wrestler (2008), Across the Universe (2007), and the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce (2011), where she received both Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. Beyond acting, Wood is a musician and activist. She was part of the electro-pop duo Rebel and a Basketcase and later formed the band Evan + Zane with guitarist Zane Carney. In 2019, she contributed to the song "Show Yourself" from Disney's Frozen II, which charted on the Billboard Hot 100. Wood is also known for her advocacy work. In 2021, she publicly named Marilyn Manson as her alleged abuser, leading to a broader conversation about abuse in the entertainment industry. She was instrumental in the passage of The Phoenix Act in California, which extended the statute of limitations for domestic violence felonies. Her experiences were documented in the 2022 HBO docuseries Phoenix Rising. In 2022, Wood starred as Madonna in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, which won the Critics Choice Award for Best Made-for-Television Movie.
