Growing up in British Columbia, Lilly initially harbored aspirations of humanitarian work. She attended the University of British Columbia, studying International Relations, and also spent time living in a grass hut in the Philippines as part of her involvement in a global relief and development organization. Before finding fame, she worked a variety of jobs, including a flight attendant, waitress, and even doing oil changes on trucks.Lilly was discovered by a Ford modeling agency in British Columbia, which eventually led her to acting. Her breakthrough role came as the resourceful and independent survivor Kate Austen in the highly popular and critically acclaimed ABC series Lost (2004–2010). Her performance earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress in a Drama Series and a Screen Actors Guild Award.Following Lost, Lilly transitioned successfully to film. She gained significant international recognition for her portrayal of the Elven warrior Tauriel in Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" film trilogy (2013–2014), a character created specifically for the films and not present in Tolkien's original novel.
