Fernando Trueba, born on January 18, 1955, in Madrid, is a highly acclaimed Spanish filmmaker, writer, producer, and editor. He is widely regarded as one of Spain's most influential contemporary directors. Trueba began his career as a film critic for the prominent Spanish newspaper El País from 1974 to 1979, and in 1980, he founded his own monthly film magazine, Casablanca. His directorial debut, Ópera prima (1980), was a critical and public success.Trueba's international recognition soared with his film Belle Époque (1992), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He has a diverse filmography that spans various genres, from comedy and drama to documentary and animation. His notable works include The Girl of Your Dreams (1998), the documentary Calle 54 (2000), a tribute to Latin jazz, and the animated feature Chico and Rita (2010), which was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Goya Award.Beyond his work as a director, Trueba is also a successful music producer, having won several Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards. He is the older brother of filmmaker David Trueba and the father of director Jonás Trueba, with whom he shares a close relationship and a similar passion for cinema.
