Filipe Matzembacher

Filipe Matzembacher (born June 20, 1988 in Porto Alegre, Brazil) is a celebrated Brazilian film director and screenwriter known for his exploration of queer identity, sexuality, and performance. A graduate in Audiovisual Production from PUC‑RS, he co-founded the production company Avante Filmes and began collaborating with fellow filmmaker Márcio Reolon on short films like Um Diálogo de Ballet (2012). Their debut feature Seashore (Beira‑Mar, 2015) premiered at the Berlinale Forum, followed by Hard Paint (Tinta Bruta, 2018), which won the Teddy Award and the CICAE Jury Award at Berlin Panorama. They also created the TV miniseries The Nest (O Ninho, 2016), and in 2025 returned to Berlinale Panorama with their erotic thriller Night Stage (Ato Noturno), again serving as co-writer, co-director, and co-producer. Matzembacher has also been recognized internationally as a juror for the Queer Palm at Cannes and teaches filmmaking and queer cinema at institutions across Brazil and Europe.
