Fionnula Flanagan is an accomplished Irish actress, born Fionnghuala Manon Flanagan on December 10, 1941, in Dublin, Ireland. Growing up bilingual, speaking both English and Irish, she received her early training at the Abbey Theatre School in Dublin and also studied in Switzerland.Flanagan began her career on the stage in 1965, gaining early acclaim in Irish language plays. She made her film debut in 1967 in "Ulysses," a film adaptation of James Joyce's novel, and has since become one of the foremost interpreters of Joyce's work, even writing and performing a one-woman stage show, "James Joyce's Women," which she later adapted into a feature film.In 1968, she moved to Los Angeles, successfully transitioning into American film and television. Her extensive career spans across a wide variety of genres and mediums. Notable film roles include "Waking Ned Devine" (1998), "The Others" (2001), "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" (2002), "Four Brothers" (2005), "Transamerica" (2005), "Yes Man" (2008), "The Guard" (2011), "Song of the Sea" (2014, voice role), and "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" (2023), where she played Grandma'am.On television, she is recognized for her recurring role as Eloise Hawking in the hit series "Lost" (2007-2010), and has appeared in numerous other popular shows such as "Rich Man, Poor Man" (for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1976), "How the West Was Won," "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," "Brotherhood," "American Gods," and "Smother."Throughout her distinguished career, Flanagan has received numerous accolades, including a Primetime Emmy Award, Irish Film & Television Awards (IFTA), and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the IFTA in 2012, recognizing her versatile and engaging performances. She was married to psychiatrist Dr. Garrett O'Connor from 1972 until his death in 2015.
