After spending four years of his childhood in Nigeria, he returned to the UK and grew up in Manchester, where he initially aspired to be a gymnast. An injury prompted him to shift focus, leading him to discover a passion for acting through drop-in drama classes at the Contact Theatre and later training at the prestigious Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Akinade is known for his versatility across stage and screen, with his television breakthrough coming in 2015 when he starred as Dean Monroe in Russell T Davies' acclaimed Channel 4 drama Cucumber and its companion series Banana. More recently, he has gained widespread international recognition for his role as the kind and supportive art teacher, Mr. Ajayi, in the hit Netflix coming-of-age series Heartstopper (2022–present). His extensive theatre work includes major productions at the National Theatre and in the West End, such as The Crucible, Romeo & Juliet (where he played Mercutio), and Barber Shop Chronicles.
