Florence Kasumba

Florence Kasumba is a Ugandan-born German actress who has made a significant impact in both German and international cinema, television, and theatre. Born on October 26, 1976, in Kampala, Uganda, she spent her childhood in Essen, Germany. Her passion for performance was ignited at the age of 12 after seeing the musical "Starlight Express." She went on to earn a degree in acting, singing, and dancing from Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Tilburg, the Netherlands, and is fluent in German, English, and Dutch.Kasumba's career began in musical theatre, where she performed in numerous acclaimed productions such as "Chicago," "The Lion King," "Cats," "West Side Story," "Evita," and the title role in Germany's premiere production of Elton John's "Aida." Her transition to screen roles saw her gain international recognition for her powerful portrayal of Ayo, a member of the elite Dora Milaje, the all-female fighting force, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She first appeared as Ayo in "Captain America: Civil War" (2016), famously delivering the line "Move or you will be moved," and reprised the role in "Black Panther" (2018), "Avengers: Infinity War" (2018), "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" (2021), and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" (2022). Beyond the MCU, Kasumba has also appeared as Senator Acantha in DC's "Wonder Woman" (2017), the Wicked Witch of the East in the NBC series "Emerald City" (2017), and voiced Shenzi in Disney's "The Lion King" (2019). Her versatility extends to various German and Dutch films and television series, showcasing her range and distinctive presence. She currently resides in Berlin, Germany.
