Born Gayatri Das on June 8, 1981, in Kochi, Kerala, Geetu Mohandas is a highly celebrated Indian filmmaker and former actress who has made significant contributions to Malayalam and Hindi cinema. She began her career as a child artist at the age of five in the 1986 film Onnu Muthal Poojyam Vare, a performance that earned her the Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist. After spending her formative years studying in India, Malaysia, and Canada, she returned to the screen as an adult lead in films like Life Is Beautiful (2000) and Thenkasipattanam. Her acting career reached a high point with the 2004 film Akale, for which she won both the Kerala State Film Award and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Transitioning from acting to filmmaking in 2009, she founded her production house, Unplugged, and directed her first short film, Kelkkunnundo (Are You Listening?), which received a National Film Award and was eventually included in the Kerala state school syllabus. Her directorial feature debut, Liar's Dice (2013), achieved major critical success, winning two National Film Awards and serving as India's official entry for the 87th Academy Awards. She followed this with the acclaimed film Moothon (2019), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the Global Filmmaker Award at Sundance. As of 2026, she is directing one of the most anticipated Indian films, the period action thriller Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, starring Yash. Personally, she has been married to National Award-winning cinematographer and director Rajeev Ravi since 2009, and they have a daughter named Aradhana.
