Gemma Christina Arterton (born 2 February 1986 in Gravesend, Kent) is an acclaimed English actress and producer. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 2008, she first drew widespread attention with her stage debut in Love’s Labour’s Lost at Shakespeare’s Globe the same year . Transitioning to film, Arterton burst onto the screen in St Trinian’s (2007) and captured global attention as Bond girl Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace (2008), a performance that earned her the Empire Award for Best Newcomer. Her versatile career spans action blockbusters (Clash of the Titans, Prince of Persia, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) and critically praised dramas such as The Disappearance of Alice Creed and Their Finest . On stage, Arterton has led productions including The Duchess of Malfi, Made in Dagenham, Nell Gwynn, and Saint Joan, earning Olivier nominations and an Evening Standard Theatre Award. In 2016, she founded Rebel Park Productions to champion female-led storytelling. Under this banner, she produced and starred in The Escape—which garnered her a Harper’s Bazaar Woman of the Year award—and the Time’s Up–inspired short Leading Lady Parts. On screen, Arterton shines in TV as well: she leads Sky’s Funny Woman, a period dramedy acclaimed for its working-class narrative and her “absolutely captivating” performance. Off-screen, she’s a committed activist, supporting Time’s Up, ERA 50:50, and MeToo; notably, she helped persuade stars to don black at the 2018 BAFTAs. In her personal life, she married actor Rory Keenan in 2019, and the couple welcomed their first child in late 2022. Arterton is currently pregnant with her second, and continues to balance motherhood with a dynamic career .
