Geoffrey Owens
Geoffrey Owens is an accomplished American actor, director, and teacher, best known for his role as Elvin Tibideaux on the hugely popular NBC sitcom, 'The Cosby Show', from 1985 to 1992. Born on March 18, 1961, in Brooklyn, New York, he is the son of the late United States Congressman Major Owens and is a Yale University graduate (cum laude, 1983). After his breakthrough on television, Owens maintained a steady, diverse career, including roles on series like 'Divorce', 'Lucifer', 'Blue Bloods', and memorable comedic appearances as a pseudo-celebrity on 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia'.Beyond the screen, Owens is a dedicated theater artist, having founded and served as the artistic director of The Brooklyn Shakespeare Company. He has an extensive background in classical theater, appearing in Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, and has taught acting and Shakespeare at prestigious institutions like Yale, Columbia, and Pace Universities. In 2018, Owens gained significant media attention when photos of him working as a cashier at a Trader Joe's grocery store in New Jersey went viral. While the initial attention led to a public discussion about "job-shaming" and the financial instability of a working actor's life, the overwhelming public and industry support for his commitment to honest work led to a career resurgence. Following the incident, he received several new acting offers, including a role on Tyler Perry's 'The Haves and the Have Nots' and a guest role on 'NCIS: New Orleans'. He currently stars in the CBS sitcom 'Poppa's House'. He remains a respected figure who embodies the dignity of work in all its forms.
