Her father is of Indian Tamil descent, and her mother is Swiss-German, an artist who trained in musical theatre. Viswanathan showed an early interest in performing, appearing in a Kodak commercial at age four and later attending the Hunter School of the Performing Arts. She briefly moved to Los Angeles at fifteen to pursue acting, initially aiming for Disney and Nickelodeon roles. While studying International Studies and Journalism in Sydney, she honed her skills in stand-up and sketch comedy.Viswanathan's breakthrough came with her role as Kayla in the 2018 American comedy film Blockers, which garnered her significant attention and was referred to as "the film's breakout star" by Refinery29.
