Glynn Turman is a highly respected and prolific American actor with a career spanning over six decades across stage, film, and television. Born in New York City on January 31, 1947, he began his acting journey as a child, making his Broadway debut at the age of 12 in the original 1959 production of Lorraine Hansberry's iconic play, "A Raisin in the Sun," starring alongside Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee.After graduating from the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan, Turman honed his craft in various regional and repertory theatre companies. His early film career in the 1970s included roles in blaxploitation films like "Five on the Black Hand Side" (1973) and "Thomasine & Bushrod" (1974), before gaining significant recognition as Leroy "Preach" Jackson in the classic 1975 coming-of-age film "Cooley High."Turman has a distinguished television career, with notable roles such as Lew Miles on the prime-time soap opera "Peyton Place" (1968–1969), math professor and retired Colonel Bradford Taylor on the NBC sitcom "A Different World" (1988–1993), and the powerful portrayal of Baltimore Mayor Clarence V. Royce on the acclaimed HBO drama series "The Wire" (2002–2008). He has also made appearances in numerous other popular shows like "Fargo," "How to Get Away with Murder," "Power," and "Queen Sugar," and is set to appear in the upcoming film "STRAW" (2025).Throughout his extensive career, Turman has consistently delivered compelling performances, earning him critical acclaim and several accolades.
