Hailey Benton Gates (born March 28, 1990) is a multifaceted American actress, director, journalist, and model known for her work in "auteur" cinema and investigative documentary. Raised in Los Angeles in a family with deep creative roots—her grandmother is the acclaimed screenwriter Joan Tewkesbury—Gates graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with a degree in experimental theater. She first broke into the cultural mainstream as the host and executive producer of the Viceland series States of Undress (2016–2017), where she traveled to regions like Pakistan, Liberia, and Palestine to explore the intersection of fashion, politics, and social justice. Her early career also included a role as an editor for The Paris Review and high-profile modeling campaigns for brands like Miu Miu. As an actress, Gates has carved out a niche in bold, indie-leaning projects. She made her film debut in Ricki and the Flash (2015) before appearing in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return (2017) and the Safdie brothers' thriller Uncut Gems (2019). More recently, she appeared in Luca Guadagnino’s short O Night Divine (2021) and the tennis drama Challengers (2024). In 2025, she made a major splash as a filmmaker, writing and directing her debut feature Atropia (produced by Guadagnino and starring Alia Shawkat and Callum Turner), which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. As of early 2026, she is highly active in the A24 stable, appearing in the Timothée Chalamet starrer Marty Supreme and the psychological drama The Drama alongside Zendaya and Robert Pattinson.
