Initially pursuing studies in German and Romance languages, Schygulla also took acting lessons, which led to her meeting director Rainer Werner Fassbinder in the 1960s. Their collaboration marked the beginning of a prolific partnership, with Schygulla becoming a central figure in the New German Cinema movement. Schygulla's filmography includes notable works such as The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979), where she portrayed the titular character, earning the Berlin Silver Bear for Best Actress.
