Harriet Jane "Hattie" Morahan (born October 7, 1978) is a highly acclaimed English actress known for her intellectual depth and "English rose" elegance across stage, television, and film. Born in Lambeth, London, she hails from a prominent theatrical family; she is the daughter of the late television and film director Christopher Morahan and actress Anna Carteret. Despite her lineage, Morahan chose to study English Literature at New Hall, Cambridge, where she graduated in 2000, and opted against formal drama school training, instead "learning on the job" through a year-long stint with the Royal Shakespeare Company. She first gained widespread television fame as Elinor Dashwood in the 2008 BBC adaptation of Sense and Sensibility and later starred in the mystery series The Bletchley Circle. Her career reached a pinnacle in 2012–2013 when her portrayal of Nora in A Doll’s House at the Young Vic earned her the Evening Standard Theatre Award and the Critics' Circle Theatre Award for Best Actress, as well as an Olivier Award nomination. In the 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast, Morahan played the pivotal role of Agathe, the village hermit who is eventually revealed to be the Enchantress responsible for cursing the Prince. Unlike the animated original, her character remains a constant, silent guardian throughout the film, rescuing Belle’s father, Maurice, from the woods and ultimately lifting the curse after Belle professes her love. Morahan also provided the opening narration for the film. Her extensive filmography includes roles in The Golden Compass, Mr. Holmes, Enola Holmes, and Operation Mincemeat. In recent years, she has remained a prominent figure on television with roles in the Netflix hit Fool Me Once (2024), Sex Education, and the Apple TV+ thriller Hijack. In her personal life, she has been in a long-term relationship with actor Blake Ritson since their university days; the couple has two children.
