Hyun Bong-sik

Hyun Bong‑sik (현봉식; born Hyun Jae‑young on October 20, 1984, in Busan) is a versatile South Korean actor who began his on-screen journey in 2014 with a small role in The Pirates. Known for his mature looks that enable him to convincingly portray characters much older than his actual age, he has since built an impressive resume across films, short features, and TV dramas. His breakout screen performance came in the 2017 landmark film 1987: When the Day Comes, where he played Section Chief Park, a role that garnered significant attention. He has continued to shine in diverse roles such as detective parts in The Witch: Part 1 and Mouse, and more recently through his portrayal of Choi San—detective partner to Son Suk‑ku—in the 2025 Disney+ thriller Nine Puzzles. Off-screen, Hyun is known for his remarkable life story: before acting, he held various odd jobs—including truck driving, delivery work, and even a stint at Samsung Electronics—before discovering his passion for performance through an improvisation class in his mid‑20s. A latecomer to the craft, he brought methodical dedication to it, earning critical acclaim—most recently, Best Supporting Actor at the 2024 Korean Association of Film Critics Awards—and is currently a Baeksang Arts Awards nominee for his TV work . With over 50 projects to his name in just under a decade, Hyun’s journey is testament to perseverance, resilience, and the power of raw talent.
