He attended Bolton School, where he participated in school plays, and later won a scholarship to St Catharine's College, Cambridge, to read English Literature, where he was an active member of the Marlowe Society.McKellen began his professional stage career in 1961, quickly establishing himself as a formidable talent in British theatre. He became a leading figure in the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, known for his extraordinary versatility and powerful performances in classical and modern plays. His numerous accolades for his stage work include six Laurence Olivier Awards. He received particular acclaim for his Shakespearean roles, including Macbeth, King Lear, Iago, and Richard III, the latter of which he also co-adapted and starred in the 1995 film version. While he had a distinguished stage career for decades, McKellen gained global superstardom later in his career with two iconic blockbuster roles. He is universally recognized as the wise and powerful wizard Gandalf in Peter Jackson's epic The Lord of the Rings trilogy (The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003)), a role he reprised in The Hobbit trilogy (2012-2014). Simultaneously, he portrayed the formidable mutant Magneto in Bryan Singer's X-Men film series, beginning with X-Men (2000) and continuing through several sequels, including X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014).Beyond these franchise roles, McKellen's extensive filmography includes "Gods and Monsters" (1998), for which he received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of director James Whale.
