Ilya Naishuller

Ilya Naishuller is a Russian filmmaker and musician, renowned for his innovative approach to action cinema. Born on November 19, 1983, in Moscow, he spent part of his childhood in London before returning to Russia, where he graduated from the British International School in Yasenevo. Naishuller briefly studied at the All-Russian Research Institute of Television and Radio Broadcasting and later attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, though he did not complete his degree. In 2008, Naishuller co-founded the indie rock band Biting Elbows, serving as the lead vocalist and guitarist. The band's 2013 music video for "Bad Motherfucker," directed by Naishuller, gained viral success, amassing over 45 million views and catching the attention of Hollywood filmmakers. Transitioning to filmmaking, Naishuller made his directorial debut with Hardcore Henry (2015), an action film shot entirely from a first-person perspective using GoPro cameras. The film, produced by Timur Bekmambetov, was notable for its immersive, video game-like experience. He followed this with Nobody (2021), an action-comedy starring Bob Odenkirk, which further established his reputation in Hollywood. In addition to his film work, Naishuller has directed music videos for artists such as The Weeknd and the Russian band Leningrad. He is also the founder of the film production company Versus Pictures. Naishuller married actress Darya Charusha in 2010.
