Imelda May
Imelda May is an acclaimed Irish singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, born Imelda Mary Clabby on July 10, 1974, in The Liberties area of Dublin. She began her musical journey at a young age, performing in clubs around Dublin from the age of sixteen. She developed a distinctive musical style often characterized as rockabilly revival, though her influences are broad, encompassing jazz, blues, swing, folk, and soul, leading to comparisons with jazz greats like Billie Holiday. After forming her own band in 2002, May released her debut studio album, No Turning Back, in 2003. Her international breakthrough came with her second album, Love Tattoo (2008), which topped the charts in Ireland and garnered critical acclaim. Her subsequent albums, Mayhem (2010) and Tribal (2014), continued her success, solidifying her reputation for her powerful vocals and unique retro-inspired style. While initially known for her rockabilly sound and distinctive pin-up look, May has continually evolved her music, exploring new genres and incorporating more contemporary sounds, particularly evident in her 2017 album Life Love Flesh Blood, produced by T Bone Burnett.Beyond her music, Imelda May has expanded into acting, making her feature film debut in Fisherman's Friends: One and All (2022) and is also slated to appear in Four Letters of Love (2025) and The People Before. She has also ventured into television presenting, hosting her own music show, The Imelda May Show, for RTÉ Ireland and a Sky Arts series, Voices Of Ireland, exploring Irish literary talent. A notable performer, she has shared stages with music legends such as Jeff Beck, Jools Holland, U2, Lou Reed, and Ronnie Wood, and even sang the Irish national anthem before the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor fight in Las Vegas in 2017. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Imelda May is also known as a poet, releasing her debut poetry collection, A Lick & A Promise, in 2021, and is an advocate for women's rights.
