Indira Varma is a British actress acclaimed for her diverse roles across film, television, and theatre. Born on September 27, 1973, in Bath, Somerset, to an Indian father and a Swiss mother of part Genoese Italian descent, she was raised in a household where both parents were involved in the fine arts . Varma trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 1995. She made her film debut in Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996), directed by Mira Nair, and later appeared in Bride and Prejudice (2004). Her early television roles include Niobe in Rome (2005–2007), Suzie Costello in Torchwood (2006), and Zoe Luther in Luther (2010). Varma gained international recognition for her portrayal of Ellaria Sand in Game of Thrones (2014–2017) . In addition to her screen work, Varma has an extensive theatre career. She won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in Present Laughter (2019) and received a nomination for her role in Oedipus (2025) . Varma's recent projects include starring as Tala Durith in Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), voicing The Duchess in Doctor Who (2024), and appearing in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025).
