James Gunn

James Francis Gunn Jr. (born August 5, 1966) is an American filmmaker and executive currently serving as the co-Chairman and CEO of DC Studios. Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Gunn began his creative journey at age 12 by making 8mm zombie films with his brothers. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Louis University and a Master of Fine Arts in prose writing from Columbia University in 1995. His professional career launched at Troma Entertainment, where he co-wrote the cult hit Tromeo and Juliet (1996). He later gained mainstream success as a screenwriter for the live-action Scooby-Doo (2002) and Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead (2004). Gunn made his directorial debut with the horror-comedy Slither (2006) before rising to global prominence by writing and directing Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Following his work with Marvel, he transitioned to DC to direct The Suicide Squad (2021) and create the Peacemaker series. In November 2022, he was appointed to lead DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, where he is now overseeing the creative direction of the new DC Universe, starting with the 2025 film Superman.
