Lawrence Jay Duplass Jr., known as Jay Duplass, is an American filmmaker, actor, and author. Born on March 7, 1973, in New Orleans, Louisiana, he is widely recognized for his collaborative work with his younger brother, Mark Duplass. Together, they have been at the forefront of the independent filmmaking movement known as "mumblecore," which is characterized by low-budget, improvised, and naturalistic filmmaking.The Duplass brothers first gained attention with their short films, and their first feature, The Puffy Chair (2005), became a cult hit and a landmark of the mumblecore genre. They went on to write, direct, and produce a number of successful independent films, including Baghead (2008), Cyrus (2010), and Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011), often using minimal crews and focusing on character-driven stories. They also founded Duplass Brothers Productions, which has produced films and series for a wide range of other independent filmmakers.In addition to his directing and writing, Jay Duplass has built a successful career as an actor. He starred in the Amazon Video comedy-drama series Transparent, for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award, and co-created the HBO series Togetherness with his brother. He has appeared in a variety of films and television shows, including Paper Towns (2015), The Mindy Project, and most recently, as an executive producer on the 2024 film The Knife.
