Jean Luc Herbulot is a Congolese film director and screenwriter, born in 1983 in Pointe-Noire, Republic of the Congo. He started drawing and writing at a young age, later exploring music and video game programming. In 2000, he moved to Paris to study Economics before shifting his focus to graphic design. He worked for TF1 as a graphic designer for six years, where he also created his own production company for independent music videos.His filmmaking career began with short films, including "Vierge(s)" (2004) and "Concurrence loyale" (2009), which was acquired by Canal Plus. In 2014, he directed his first feature film, "Dealer," which became the first French indie movie bought by Netflix. He later moved to Los Angeles.In 2017, Herbulot returned to Africa. In 2019, he created, directed, and served as showrunner for the TV series "Sakho & Mangane," filmed in Dakar, Senegal for Canal+ Afrique. That same year, he partnered with producer Pamela Diop to establish Lacmé Studios in Dakar, aiming to foster African filmmaking. Their first project was "Saloum" (2021), which Herbulot wrote and directed and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. He later collaborated with Hus Miller on the action-thriller "Zero" (2024), which he co-wrote and directed. Herbulot is known for his high-concept thrillers and his ability to work within budget constraints while maintaining creative control.
