Jess Hong

Jess Hong is a New Zealand actress of Chinese descent, celebrated for her dynamic performances across film, television, and theatre. Born in Auckland in 1997, she was raised in Palmerston North by her mother, an immigrant from Guangzhou, China, and her father from Shanghai. Hong began her acting journey at 13 to overcome shyness and social anxiety, later studying at Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School, graduating in 2019 . In the 2024 body horror film Grafted, directed by Sasha Rainbow, Hong portrays Angela, Wei's cousin. Angela is a deeply anglicized Chinese New Zealander who distances herself from her heritage to maintain popularity at university. Her cold and dismissive attitude towards Wei adds to the film's critique of societal beauty standards and cultural assimilation . Hong gained international recognition for her role as Jin Cheng in Netflix's 3 Body Problem (2024), a sci-fi series based on Liu Cixin's trilogy, produced by the creators of Game of Thrones . Her portrayal of the innovative yet socially awkward scientist Jin Cheng was noted for its depth and authenticity. Beyond screen acting, Hong has an extensive theatre background, with lead roles in productions such as Romeo and Juliet, An Organ of Soft Tissue, and 48 Nights on Hope Street. She has also appeared in short films like Got Milk (which she directed), Red Envelopes, and Baggage. Represented by Johnson & Laird in New Zealand and internationally, Jess Hong continues to build a diverse portfolio, contributing significantly to the representation of Chinese New Zealanders in the arts .
