Jia Ling

Jia Ling (born Jia Yuling on April 29, 1982) is a highly influential Chinese comedian, actress, and filmmaker who transitioned from being a struggling crosstalk performer to a global record-breaking director. A graduate of the Central Academy of Drama, she rose to national fame in 2010 through her popular comedic skits on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, establishing herself as a rare and successful female presence in the male-dominated field of Chinese comedy. In 2016, she co-founded her own company, Big Bowl Entertainment, and made an explosive directorial debut with the 2021 film Hi, Mom, a time-travel comedy and tribute to her late mother, which she also starred in and co-wrote. The film grossed over $840 million, making her, for a time, the world's highest-grossing solo female director for a single film. She followed this success with her 2024 film YOLO (an adaptation of the Japanese film 100 Yen Love), which she again directed, starred in, and co-wrote, and for which she underwent a widely publicized physical transformation, gaining and then losing over 50 kg (110 lbs) to portray a woman who finds purpose through boxing. Both films have been massive commercial and cultural hits, cementing Jia Ling's status as a major cinematic force.
