Joanne Whalley is an English actress born on August 25, 1961, in Salford, Lancashire. She began her career in 1974, making early television appearances in popular British soap operas like Coronation Street and Emmerdale. Her feature film debut was in Birth of the Beatles (1979).Whalley rose to prominence with roles in the BBC drama serials Edge of Darkness (1985), for which she received a BAFTA TV Award nomination for Best Actress, and The Singing Detective (1986). On stage, her performance in Saved earned her a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in 1985.She gained further recognition for her roles in both British and American feature films, including Willow (1988), where she met and later married actor Val Kilmer. During their marriage (1988-1996), she was sometimes credited as Joanne Whalley-Kilmer. Other notable film roles include Scandal (1989), Navy Seals (1990), Shattered (1991), The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997), and 44 Inch Chest (2009).Her extensive television career includes playing titular roles in Scarlett (1994) and Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis (2000), as well as significant roles in The Borgias (2011-2013), Wolf Hall (2015), The White Princess (2017), Daredevil (2018), Tin Star (2019-2020), and Carnival Row (2023).
