Johannes "Joe" Taslim is an Indonesian actor, model, and martial artist. Born on June 23, 1981, he is of Chinese descent. Taslim's career is defined by his formidable martial arts background, which he has successfully translated into an impressive and growing filmography.He began studying martial arts at a young age, with training in disciplines like judo, taekwondo, pencak silat, and wushu. His primary focus was judo, and he was a member of Indonesia's national judo team from 1997 to 2009. During this period, he was a decorated athlete, winning several medals, including a gold at the 1999 Southeast Asia Judo Championships and a silver at the 2007 Southeast Asian Games. A knee injury ultimately led to his retirement from competition in 2009.After his professional athletic career, Taslim transitioned into acting, which he had always been passionate about. His breakthrough role came in the critically acclaimed 2011 Indonesian action film The Raid: Redemption, where he played Sergeant Jaka. His powerful and athletic performance in the film brought him international attention. This led to his Hollywood debut as the villainous Jah in the 2013 blockbuster Fast & Furious 6, where he showcased his martial arts and parkour skills.Since then, Taslim has continued to build his career with roles in both Hollywood and international productions. He played an alien antagonist in Star Trek Beyond (2016) and had a starring role as Li Yong in the television series Warrior (2019-2023). In 2021, he gained further widespread recognition for his role as Sub-Zero in the film reboot of Mortal Kombat, a character he is set to reprise in the sequel.
