Joel Kim Booster

Joel Kim Booster (born Kim Joonmin on Jeju Island, February 29, 1988) is a South Korean–born American comedian, actor, writer, and producer. Adopted and raised in Plainfield, Illinois in a conservative evangelical family, he discovered his passion for theatre at Millikin University before moving to Chicago and then New York to pursue stand-up and writing . He first gained attention with a 2017 Comedy Central special and released his debut album Model Minority in 2018. Booster wrote, produced, and starred in the acclaimed Hulu rom-com Fire Island (2022), earned Emmy and Independent Spirit nominations, and released his Netflix special Psychosexual the same year, which was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award . A regular voice actor and writer on shows like Big Mouth, The Other Two, Shrill, and Loot, he also appears on Apple TV+’s Loot as Nicholas . In 2025, Booster lent his voice in Netflix’s K‑Pop Demon Hunters. Openly gay and living with bipolar disorder, he frequently explores identity, sexuality, and mental health through sharp, self-aware comedy, while maintaining a humble focus on making people laugh rather than serving as a “trailblazer”.
