John Stephen Goodman (born June 20, 1952) is a highly prolific and versatile American actor, known for his imposing physical presence, distinctive voice, and remarkable range in both comedic and dramatic roles across film, television, and stage.Born in Affton, Missouri, Goodman's early life saw him playing football before an injury shifted his focus to drama at Southwest Missouri State University. After graduating in 1975, he moved to New York City to pursue acting. His early career involved stage work, including Broadway productions like "Big River" (1985), and numerous commercials, before he began to land film roles in the early 1980s, such as "Revenge of the Nerds" (1984) and the Coen Brothers' "Raising Arizona" (1987).Goodman became a household name with his iconic role as Dan Conner on the groundbreaking ABC sitcom "Roseanne" (1988-1997). His portrayal of the working-class, loving, yet often exasperated patriarch earned him immense popularity, numerous Emmy nominations, and a Golden Globe Award in 1993.
