John Slattery is an accomplished American actor and director best known for his charismatic and often cynical on-screen presence, distinguished by his signature shock of silver-grey hair. Born on August 13, 1962, in Boston, Massachusetts, he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater from the Catholic University of America, grounding his career in stage work. He achieved widespread international fame and critical acclaim for his portrayal of the suave, hard-drinking advertising executive Roger Sterling in the AMC drama series Mad Men (2007–2015), a role that earned him four Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Slattery has a notable presence in major studio films, playing the younger Howard Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including Iron Man 2 (2010) and Captain America: Civil War (2016), and playing journalist Ben Bradlee Jr. in the Best Picture-winning film Spotlight (2015). His varied television work includes recurring roles on Desperate Housewives and Veep. Slattery is also a director, having helmed episodes of Mad Men and the 2014 feature film God's Pocket. Most recently, he appears in the 2025 historical drama Nuremberg, portraying Colonel Burton C. Andrus, the strict commandant of the prison housing the Nazi war criminals awaiting trial.
