Johnny Flynn

Johnny Flynn is a highly versatile British artist celebrated for his parallel careers as an acclaimed actor, musician, and composer. Born on March 14, 1983, in Johannesburg, South Africa, he is the son of actor Eric Flynn and half-brother to actors Jerome and Daniel Flynn. After moving to the UK at age two, he developed his musical talents through scholarships for the violin and trumpet before training in acting at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. On screen, Flynn is known for his starring role as the charming but romantically challenged lead, Dylan Witter, in the Channel 4/Netflix sitcom Lovesick (2014–2018), and for compelling biographical roles such as the young Albert Einstein in the National Geographic series Genius (2017) and a young Nicholas Winton in the 2023 film One Life. He has garnered significant critical attention for period roles like Mr. Knightley in Emma (2020), and as David Bowie in the film Stardust (2020), which won him a Raindance Jury's Best Actor Award. Beyond acting, Flynn is the lead singer and songwriter of the folk-rock band Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit, with whom he has released multiple studio albums. His musical compositions are often featured in his screen work; he famously wrote and sang the theme song for the BAFTA-winning comedy series Detectorists and contributed music to the score of films like Emma and The Score (in which he also starred). His acclaimed theatre work includes an Olivier Award nomination for Jerusalem and recent praise for his role as Richard Burton in The Motive and the Cue (2024). His upcoming film roles include Ripley and the family drama Goodbye June (2025).
