Josefina Scaglione is an acclaimed Argentinian musical theatre actress and singer, best known for her captivating performances on Broadway and in international productions. Born on September 5, 1987, in Trelew, Chubut, Argentina, she later moved to Rosario, Santa Fe, where she developed her passion for performing as a child. She received a scholarship to attend a summer arts program at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, before moving to Buenos Aires to pursue a professional career in musical theatre.Scaglione quickly made a name for herself in Argentina, performing in local productions of Cinderella and as Amber Von Tussle in Hairspray. Her big break came in 2009 when legendary director Arthur Laurents discovered a YouTube video of her singing. He flew her to New York City to audition, and she was immediately cast as Maria in the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story, despite being largely unknown in the United States. Her Broadway debut was met with critical acclaim, earning her an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical, a Theatre World Award, and a prestigious Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. She was the first actress playing Maria to receive a Lead Actress Tony nomination.Since her breakthrough, Scaglione has continued to showcase her talent in various theatrical roles. She starred as Jenna in the first official Spanish-language production of Waitress the Musical (titled Camarera) in Buenos Aires. She has also appeared in film and television, with credits including Hairbrained, Fairly Legal, and Kally's Mashup. Most recently, she is part of the cast of the highly anticipated American musical drama film Kiss of the Spider Woman (2025), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025.
