Julianna Margulies is an American actress celebrated for her compelling performances in television and film. Born on June 8, 1966, in Spring Valley, New York, she spent much of her early life in Europe before returning to the U.S. for college. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a degree in English literature and theater. Margulies began her acting career with small roles in television and film, including a brief appearance in Steven Seagal's Out for Justice (1991). Her breakthrough came in 1994 when she was cast as Carol Hathaway in the NBC medical drama ER.
