Julie Bowen Luetkemeyer, born on March 3, 1970, is an American actress known for her versatility in both comedic and dramatic roles. She first gained significant recognition for her role as high school English teacher Carol Vessey in the NBC comedy-drama series Ed (2000–2004). However, her most iconic and widely acclaimed role came as Claire Dunphy in the hit ABC sitcom Modern Family (2009–2020), for which she won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2011 and 2012, and received six consecutive nominations.Bowen's career began with appearances in soap operas and TV films in the early 1990s. She made her mainstream feature film debut in 1996 as Virginia Venit, the love interest of the title character, in Adam Sandler's beloved comedy Happy Gilmore, a role she is set to reprise in the upcoming sequel Happy Gilmore 2 (2025). Her film credits also include Multiplicity (1996), An American Werewolf in Paris (1997), and Horrible Bosses (2011). Beyond her prominent TV roles, she has also had recurring roles in popular series like ER (1998–1999), Lost (2005–2007), and Boston Legal (2005–2008). In addition to her acting, Bowen is also involved in voice work for animated projects and is a founding board member of the non-profit organization Baby2Baby.
