In 1997, he moved to Chennai to pursue a career in films, working various jobs to support himself before meeting director Vijay Prabhakaran, who became his mentor. Venkat's screen name, "Kaali," originated from a character he played in an unreleased film by Prabhakaran, a name that stuck with him.Before making his mark in mainstream cinema, Kaali Venkat gained recognition for his performances in various short films created for the Kalaignar TV show "Naalaya Iyakkunar," where he won the Best Actor in a Series Award in Season 3.
