Kara Wai Ying-Hung (惠英紅), born on February 3, 1960, in Shandong, China, is a renowned Hong Kong actress famous for her work in martial arts films during the 1970s and 1980s, particularly with Shaw Brothers Studio. Known for performing many of her own stunts, she gained acclaim for her strong and versatile performances in both action and dramatic roles.Her family moved to Hong Kong in 1966, and at 14, she began working as a nightclub dancer. She was discovered by director Lau Kar-leung and signed with Shaw Brothers Studio in 1975, starring in over 40 action films. In 1982, she won the first-ever Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actress for her role in My Young Auntie.After Shaw Brothers Studio closed in 1985, Kara successfully transitioned to dramatic roles. She earned several Best Actress awards for films like At the End of Daybreak (2009), Happiness (2016), and The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful (2017).Kara Wai continues to act actively and was honored with the Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2018 for her contributions to the Hong Kong film industry. With a career spanning over four decades, she remains a highly respected and influential figure in Hong Kong cinema.
