Karl Urban
Karl-Heinz Urban, widely known as Karl Urban, is a New Zealand actor born on June 7, 1972, in Wellington. His exposure to the film industry came early through his mother, who worked for a film facilities company. He first acted at the age of eight with a single line in a New Zealand television series. While he continued to participate in school productions, he didn't pursue acting professionally until after high school. He attended Victoria University of Wellington for a year before leaving to commit to his acting career.Urban initially gained recognition in New Zealand through various television roles, including playing a heroin addict in Shark in the Park and the groundbreaking role of Jamie Forrest, the first openly gay character on the popular soap opera Shortland Street. He also had recurring and diverse roles in internationally syndicated fantasy series like Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess, where he notably portrayed both Cupid and Julius Caesar. His breakthrough into Hollywood came with his role as Éomer, a formidable warrior of Rohan, in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). This was followed by a string of high-profile action roles, including Kirill in The Bourne Supremacy (2004), Vaako in The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and John "Reaper" Grimm in Doom (2005).Urban is perhaps even more widely recognized for his portrayal of Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot film series (Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and Star Trek Beyond (2016)). He also garnered critical acclaim for his performance as the titular character in the cult favorite Dredd (2012) and as Skurge in Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok (2017). Since 2019, he has gained immense popularity for his role as the foul-mouthed, supe-hating vigilante Billy Butcher in the Amazon Prime Video series The Boys, which has become one of his most iconic and acclaimed performances. His career continues to thrive with upcoming projects like Mortal Kombat II.
