Born Kathryn Aselton in Milbridge, Maine, on October 1, 1978, she was a former beauty queen, winning Miss Maine Teen USA in 1995. She studied at Boston University and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts before moving to Los Angeles, where she became involved with the independent film scene alongside her future husband, Mark Duplass. As an actress, she is best known for her main role as Jenny MacArthur in the popular FX comedy series The League (2009–2015), which she starred in alongside Duplass. She also had a main role as Amy in the first two seasons of the FX superhero drama Legion (2017–2018). Her extensive film credits include early mumblecore features like The Puffy Chair (2005) and later roles in major productions such as The Gift (2015), Bombshell (2019), the horror-thriller Synchronic (2019), and as Dr. Natalie Gates in The Unholy (2021). Most recently, she appeared in the 2023 comedy Old Dads. Beyond acting, Aselton has established a career behind the camera as a director and writer. Her feature directorial debut was the 2010 independent dramedy The Freebie, which she also wrote and starred in, and which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. She followed this with the thriller Black Rock (2012), which she directed, co-wrote, and produced. She has since directed the romantic comedy Mack & Rita (2022) starring Diane Keaton and the upcoming film Magic Hour (2025). She is married to actor/filmmaker Mark Duplass, and the couple has two daughters.
