Born Kaya Rose Humphrey on March 13, 1992, in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, England, she was raised in London by her Brazilian mother, Katia Scodelario, and her English father, Roger Humphrey. Her parents divorced when she was one year old, and she adopted her mother's surname. Growing up in a working-class environment, Scodelario attended Islington Arts and Media School, where she participated in school plays and discovered her passion for acting. At the age of 14, Scodelario was cast as Effy Stonem in the British teen drama Skins, a role that catapulted her to fame and established her as a prominent figure in British television. Following her success on Skins, she transitioned to film, starring in The Maze Runner series as Teresa, and appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) as Carina Smyth. Her other notable film credits include Wuthering Heights (2011), Now Is Good (2012), Crawl (2019), and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021). In addition to her film career, Scodelario has taken on roles in television, including the Netflix series Spinning Out (2020) and the upcoming series The Gentlemen (2024), where she portrays Susie Glass. She is also set to star in the psychological thriller The Woman in Cabin 10, alongside Keira Knightley and Guy Pearce. Beyond her acting career, Scodelario is known for her advocacy for working-class actors and her commitment to creating respectful and professional working environments. She has openly discussed her experiences with impostor syndrome and her dedication to portraying strong, authentic female characters. Currently, she is involved in the stage production East Is South, a play about artificial intelligence at Hampstead Theatre.
