Kenneth Bruce Gorelick (born June 5, 1956, in Seattle, Washington), known professionally as Kenny G, is a Grammy-winning American smooth jazz saxophonist, composer, and record producer who is the biggest-selling instrumental musician of the modern era, with global sales exceeding 75 million records. He first picked up the saxophone at the age of ten and later studied accounting at the University of Washington while simultaneously launching his professional music career, which began as a sideman for Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra at age 17. After stints with the funk band Cold, Bold & Together and the jazz-funk group The Jeff Lorber Fusion, Kenny G signed with Arista Records in 1982 to launch his solo career. His commercial breakthrough arrived with his fourth studio album, Duotones (1986), which featured the massive hit single "Songbird," reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and propelling him to international stardom. This success defined the smooth jazz genre and led to his most successful period, culminating in the 1992 album Breathless, which remains the best-selling instrumental album in history, selling over 12 million copies in the US and earning him a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition for the track "Forever in Love." He also dominates the holiday music scene, with his 1994 release, Miracles: The Holiday Album, selling over 13 million copies. Known primarily for the soprano saxophone, Kenny G has collaborated with diverse artists including Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Toni Braxton, Katy Perry, and Kanye West, showcasing his versatility. He has also been recognized in the Guinness World Records for holding an E-flat note on his saxophone for 45 minutes and 47 seconds using the circular breathing technique.
