Born Kevin George Knipfing on April 26, 1965, in Mineola, New York, he grew up in Stony Brook, Long Island, where he excelled in sports and attended SUNY Cortland, majoring in sports management. James began his comedy career in 1989 and gained national recognition through appearances on talk shows like The Tonight Show and Late Show with David Letterman. James transitioned to film with roles in Hitch (2005) and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (2007), leading to his own starring vehicle, Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009), which he co-wrote. He continued to build his film career with Grown Ups (2010), Zookeeper (2011), and Here Comes the Boom (2012). In 2016, he returned to television with Kevin Can Wait, a sitcom about a retired police officer navigating family life.
