Kris Phillips, also known by his Chinese name Fei Xiang (費翔), is a highly accomplished Taiwanese-American pop icon, singer, and actor. Born on December 24, 1960, in Taiwan to an American father and a Chinese mother, Phillips initially pursued higher education at Stanford University before dropping out to follow his passion for theater in New York. He graduated from the American Dramatic Arts Academy in 1980.His career took off in the early 1980s in Asia, where he released 13 best-selling records between 1981 and 1989, becoming a dominant force in Mandapop. A groundbreaking moment in his career came in 1987 when, as an American citizen, he became the first performer from Taiwan to appear on mainland China's New Year's Eve variety show, catapulting him to immense fame across China.In the 1990s, Phillips transitioned to musical theater, joining the original Broadway cast of Miss Saigon in 1991 and also appearing in other Broadway musicals. He later toured with Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Music of Night" concert, notably costarring with Sarah Brightman and later Elaine Paige, bringing Broadway musical concepts to mainland China for the first time.More recently, Kris Phillips has returned to acting with significant roles in major Chinese productions. He is widely recognized for his powerful portrayal of King Zhou, the cruel and dangerous ruler, in the epic "Creation of the Gods" film trilogy, including "Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms" (2023) and "Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force" (2025). His other notable film credits include "The Monkey King 2" (2016) and "Painted Skin: The Resurrection" (2012). Phillips is celebrated for his charisma, commanding presence, and his ability to bring complex characters to life on screen.
