Kris Wu, also known as Wu Yi Fan, is a Chinese-Canadian former singer, rapper, actor, and model. He initially rose to fame as a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy band EXO, which debuted in 2012. After leaving EXO in 2014, he embarked on a highly successful solo career in China, becoming a prominent figure in the entertainment industry with chart-topping music, film roles (including "xXx: Return of Xander Cage" where he played Nicks), and lucrative endorsement deals with major international brands like Louis Vuitton and Porsche.However, Kris Wu's career came to a dramatic halt due to serious legal issues. In 2021, allegations of sexual assault and rape surfaced against him, primarily from a young woman named Du Meizhu, who publicly accused him of luring and having sexual relations with her and other women, some of whom were reportedly minors and intoxicated. These allegations led to a widespread public outcry in China and internationally, resulting in brands severing ties with him and his works being removed from Chinese streaming platforms and social media.In November 2022, a Chinese court sentenced Kris Wu to 13 years in prison for rape and "assembling a crowd to engage in promiscuous activities." The court stated that he raped three women in 2020 and was the ringleader in an incident in 2018 where he and others allegedly assaulted two women. He was also fined 600 million yuan (approximately $84 million USD) for tax evasion. His appeal against the conviction was rejected by a Beijing court in November 2023, upholding the original sentence.As of the current date (July 17, 2025), Kris Wu is serving his 13-year prison sentence in China. Upon completion of his sentence, he is expected to be deported from China. His career in the entertainment industry has effectively ended due to these convictions.
