Lam Suet
Lam Suet (born Lin Jie on July 8, 1964) is a highly prolific and respected Hong Kong character actor. Born in Tianjin, China, he moved to Hong Kong in 1979 and initially worked various odd jobs before finding his way into the film industry in the mid-1980s. He started with behind-the-scenes roles, including prop master, lighting assistant, and script supervisor, which gave him a comprehensive understanding of filmmaking.Lam's acting career took off with the help of two key directors: Stephen Chow and Johnnie To. He appeared in Chow's films like The God of Cookery (1996) and Kung Fu Hustle (2004). However, it was his collaboration with director Johnnie To that cemented his reputation. Known for his distinctive physical presence, he became a regular in To's films, often cast as a secondary character who provides comic relief or serves as a bumbling, yet memorable, figure. His most acclaimed roles came from his work with To, earning him multiple award nominations. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards for his role in The Mission (1999). He also won the Golden Bauhinia Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as a hapless cop in PTU (2003). Lam Suet is widely regarded as one of Hong Kong's most dependable and versatile "green leaf" actors, a term used for supporting actors who are essential to a film's success. He has appeared in over 100 films, including a wide range of genres from crime thrillers to comedies. He continues to be a sought-after actor, with recent notable roles in films like The White Storm 3: Heaven or Hell (2023) and I Did It My Way (2023).
