Lars Jessen

Born on April 13, 1969, in Kiel, Germany, Lars Jessen is a distinguished director, producer, and screenwriter known for his deep creative ties to Northern Germany and his commitment to sustainable "green" filmmaking. After studying history, political science, and philosophy in Cologne, he transitioned into the film industry, gaining early acclaim with the 2005 drama Am Tag, als Bobby Ewing starb, which won the Max Ophüls Prize. Throughout his prolific career, Jessen has become a master of the "Heimat" genre, often infusing his work with dry North German humor and authentic regional settings. His most notable directorial works include the cult music mockumentary Fraktus (2012), the multi-award-winning Mittagsstunde (2022), and the critically acclaimed TV movie Für immer Sommer 90 (2020), which earned him the prestigious Grimme Prize and the German Television Prize. In the 2024–2025 season, Jessen expanded his repertoire by taking on a significant acting role as Grandpa Arjan in Fatih Akin’s historical drama Amrum (2025), a film that has garnered multiple nominations at the 2026 Bavarian Film Awards. Beyond acting, he continues to be a powerhouse behind the scenes as a producer through his company, Florida Film, where he develops a wide range of series, documentaries, and features. His recent directorial projects include the 2025 personal documentary Jetzt. Wohin. – Meine Reise mit Robert Habeck, which followed the former politician’s election campaign, and the social comedy Prange, which debuted on ARD in late 2025.
