Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox is a highly influential American actress, producer, and fierce LGBTQ+ advocate, best known for her groundbreaking role as Sophia Burset on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black (2013–2019). Born on May 29, 1972, in Mobile, Alabama, she pursued her early passion for the arts by studying dance at the Alabama School of Fine Arts and later at Marymount Manhattan College. Her career prior to her breakout role included appearances on reality television, such as I Want to Work for Diddy, and producing and starring in the VH1 makeover show, TRANSform Me (2010), making her the first African-American transgender person to produce and star in her own television show. Her performance in Orange Is the New Black brought her widespread critical acclaim, making her the first openly transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in an acting category in 2014. This was one of several "firsts" she achieved, including being the first openly transgender person to appear on the cover of Time magazine (2014) and, in 2015, the first openly transgender woman to win a Daytime Emmy Award as an Executive Producer for the documentary Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word. She has since taken on diverse roles in films like Promising Young Woman (2020) and the Netflix limited series Inventing Anna (2022). Beyond her acting work, Cox is a powerful activist who uses her platform to raise awareness about the lives and issues facing the transgender community, particularly transgender women of color, operating as a vital "possibility model" for marginalized youth. She is also the Executive Producer of the acclaimed 2020 documentary, Disclosure, which examines the history of transgender representation in media.
