Mara Venier
Mara Venier, born Mara Povoleri on October 20, 1950, in Venice, is one of Italy's most popular and enduring television presenters and a former actress, affectionately nicknamed "Zia Mara" (Aunt Mara) by her audience. Her career began in the early 1970s with acting roles in film and television, including a main role in the TV series Diario di un italiano (1973) and appearances in films such as Nanni Loy's Testa o croce (Heads or Tails) in 1982. She transitioned to hosting in her late thirties, but her television career truly soared in 1993 when she became the face of the long-running Sunday afternoon variety show Domenica In on Rai 1.Venier's association with Domenica In has been the cornerstone of her fame, as she has hosted the show across multiple, non-consecutive stints, becoming synonymous with the program and Italian Sunday television. Over the years, she has hosted a wide array of other programs, including game shows, musical events, and talk shows like La vita in diretta, and served as a popular judge on the talent show Tú sí que vales. Despite a brief career hiccup and a move to Mediaset channels in the late 1990s and 2000s, she always returned to Rai and her most beloved show. She returned to host Domenica In once again in 2018, consolidating her status as a leading figure in Italian television. In addition to her prolific TV work, she has continued to take on acting roles, including an appearance in the 2024 film Diamanti. She is married to film producer and publisher Nicola Carraro.
